storyline

 

Rise up, rise up or 25 years in 10 beds. A story of a self-made man of Central European transition, a bit of a simpleton, who goes willy-nilly through a crash-course in capitalism. He gets on a high-speed train, taking up speed on every bend. As a conquence of transition driven changes our Hero loses his regular job and needs to take matters into his own hands. He becomes successful but it takes a toll on his personal life. To find peace of mind he eventually accepts his unusual fate. And so much happens along the way! Plagues descend on him like on the biblical Job: the fall of communism, uncertainty about the future, false hopes, crumbling business, lack of rules, the mob, global crisis, betrayal and abandonment. Yet our Hero is able to overcome the troubles and stay afloat thanks to his sense of humour and stoic reserve. At the end of it all, he realises that the tough and often painful transformation gave him a rich and colourful life. Otherwise, he would have slept through it. But he rose up and made another bed for himself.

Director, scriptwriter, journalist. Born in 1972. Holds master degree of Film Science from Jagiellonian University Cracow. For a few years worked as a tv reporter for TVP and TVN making a lot of short documentaries. Finished Film Directing in Silesia University Katowice, as well as docu and fiction courses in Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing.

In 2003 Bartek won Planete Germany international script competition for a documentary film. He made the Goat Walker (2004) out of it, awarded at Berlinale 2004, received many audience awards, shown in all the Planete stations worldwide.

His next film was a 40 minutes fiction Three For The Taking (2006), one of the most awarded Polish short.

In 2009 Bartek directed and co-scripted 50 minutes documentary Rabbit a la Berlin, nominated for an Oscar, received over 20 awards, shown at 70 festivals, broadcasted in 40 countries.

His feature debut was Fear of Falling (2011) premiered in IFF Montreal, awarded in Mannheim, Mumbai, Lecce, Vincennes, Gdynia and many others. Got 60 thousands admissions in Polish cinemas. Distributed in France, Spain, Iran.

Bartek was granted by Polish Ministry of Culture and Nipkow Berlin scholarships. Participated in EAVE, Documentary Campus and Ex Oriente workshops.

Led master classes in Germany, Lithuania, Poland.

A member of the European Film Academy and Polish Film Institute Board.

This movie brought me a lot of happiness, which I had nearly lost, shooting serious documentaries and features. It allowed me to celebrate the joi de vivre and freely play around with forms and conventions. One can rarely make a movie that shines with all kinds of emotions, changing from scene to scene – one that allows for a free play of associations and surprising contrasts.

Michał Ogórek contributed his distinctive handwriting, the actors created emotional and frenzied characters, Jacek Podgórski gave form to it with beautiful cinematography, Katarzyna Masztakow filled it with meaningful props, Marta Ostrowicz – with costumes, Agnieszka Hodowana added hairstyles and looks, Andrzej Dąbrowski (editor) watched over every little detail, while Anna Wydra (producer) and Marta Wierzbicka (production manager) put it all together. They were my Dream Team. It was the best movie set and throughout those two months I was on cloud nine.

I could not thank more Narodowy Bank Polski, the most noble of patrons. I wish that everyone in our country had so much sense of humour, class and trust in Art.
